Real Madrid $4.8 billion
Since president Florentino Perez returned to Real Madrid’s top job in 2009, he has spent more than €500 million on players and begun construction of a new 68,000-seat stadium that will cost another €500 million. Of all that money spent on talent and construction, he hasn’t won anything.
The Champions League once was as much his trophy as it was predecessor Ramon Calderon’s before him, but now Perez is out of European soccer’s elite competition altogether until next season at least.
Now Madrid is the richest football club in the world. Barcelona $4.2 billion: Barcelona isn’t spending nearly as much money as it used to with Qatar Tourism Authority pumping hundreds of millions into its coffers every year through sponsorship deals.
FC Barcelona – $4.8 billion
If you didn’t already know, FC Barcelona is quite a bit richer than many other football clubs on earth. In fact, Barca as it’s known to fans is more valuable than every other sports team on earth besides. Both of those teams are also soccer squads based out of Europe. As of 2014, Spanish sports marketing research firm Brand Finance ranked Barca as No. 1 among all teams across all major sports, worth $4.8 billion in total.
That was actually down from 2013 when Barca pulled in $5.2 billion and first place overall. Among European soccer teams, Barcelona has three times as much brand value compared to its closest competitor, according to Forbes’ 2013 list of most valuable franchises.
Bayern Munich $4.22 billion
Bayern Munich is a German professional football club based in Munich, Bavaria. They are historically one of Germany’s most successful clubs with 18 Bundesliga titles, 11 DFB-Pokals, and five UEFA Champions League titles. The club was formed by members of a Munich gymnastics club and is mostly associated with the color red.
In addition to their domestic successes, Bayern has won 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 FIFA Club World Cup. According to Forbes magazine (2018), Bayern is ranked as the third most valuable football club in the world In fact, it is worth $4.22 billion. In Germany, it is number one of three clubs along with Borussia Dortmund and Schalke that are valued at over $2 billion.
Manchester United 4.2 billion
Manchester United is, by some distance, both England’s richest and most successful football club worth $4.2 billion. According to Deloitte’s list of wealthiest football clubs (released back in January), Manchester United was worth a whopping $3.69 billion dollars. They are also top of Forbes‘ list for overall sports teams worldwide net worth ($3.23 billion).
In fact, that Forbes estimate puts them ahead of all other English clubs combined! For more than two decades now, Old Trafford has been home to one of football’s most successful brands and is routinely packed with over 75,000 fans every single week; which makes it Europe’s largest club stadium by capacity.
Liverpool $4.1 billion
The team is owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns and operates Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox. The team made a big splash with its spending during last summer’s transfer window as it acquired Brazil striker Roberto Firmino from German club Hoffenheim for $51 million.
The deal is one of several that have brought up Liverpool’s net worth. All told, if you add up all of Fenway Sports Group’s soccer-related assets, including its ownership stake in another English Premier League club, Derby County FC, and Fenway’s Liverpool rights along with those of Liverpool FC Women and Liverpool FC International Academy (two other FSG clubs), their total worth comes to an estimated $4.1 billion. That puts them at Number 5.
Manchester City $4 billion
Manchester City is worth an estimated $4 billion. That’s nearly twice as much as their nearest rival Liverpool on Forbes’ list of the world’s most valuable sports teams, and almost three times what they were worth back in 2011.
Manchester United has been ranked as football’s richest club since 2008 with a current value of $3.1 billion. The team is owned by Malcolm Glazer and his family, who bought it for around $1.5 billion back in 2005 even though there were rumors that it was valued at up to $3 billion before they purchased it.
Chelsea $3.2 billion
Next up is Chelsea, with a net worth of $3.2 billion. This London-based team has also been around for more than 100 years, winning 19 English Premier League titles and 7 FA Cups. In fact, Chelsea has been so successful over recent years that they’ve decided to move to a new stadium near London’s Olympic Park in time for their 2015-2016 season (and they’re spending an estimated $1 billion to make it happen).
They may not be as popular worldwide as other clubs like Manchester United or Barcelona but no one can argue that Chelsea isn’t one of football’s richest teams these days.
Arsenal $2.8 billion
Forbes, who is notoriously critical of football accounting and has been for years, estimates that Arsenal’s revenue for last season was $2.8 billion. That makes them, at least on paper, one of the eighth richest football clubs in world football. But wait a minute: last season Arsenal’s revenue actually decreased from $423 million to $419 million.
How can that be? They managed to increase their matchday revenue by $6 million and also significantly improved commercial revenue with new sponsorship deals like Puma and Fly Emirates worth more than $60 million per year combined—but only managed to generate an additional $1 million through broadcasting rights.
Paris Saint-Germaine – $2.5 billion
The Paris Saint-Germain football club is a perfect example of how money can buy success. PSG has been able to attract some of Europe’s best talent and create an attacking line-up that would look comfortable in any top-flight league. The Ligue 1 side spent upwards of $127.71 million last year.
They are worth upwards of $2.5 billion dollars. PSG’s academy includes several young players ready for further development into Europe’s best, making them one of France’s most valuable clubs. They have got some of the best talented players in the world like Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr and Ramos, Don’t be surprised if you see this club on the top of the list in coming years.
Tottenham Hotspurs – $2.3 billion
With a net worth of $2.3 billion, Tottenham Hotspurs is one of England’s most valuable football clubs and has been for several years. They’re also a regular contender for championships, having made it to one Champions League final and three Europa League finals since 2010. In that time, they’ve more than doubled their original value as well.
Having won multiple titles and cups as an independent club before being purchased by current owner Joe Lewis, Spurs have certainly earned their place among England’s elite clubs. Their challenge now is to keep on outperforming their competition and increasing revenue so they can eventually dethrone some of Europe’s top teams Manchester United, Real Madrid, or Barcelona as the richest club in all of the sports.
How do football clubs make money?
All football clubs, no matter where they are in terms of prestige or history, make money by running a number of different revenue streams. Broadly speaking, there are two key areas: commercial and matchday.
Commercial revenues relate to business deals with sponsors and partners, while matchday revenues come from ticket sales and hospitality activities at home games. In addition to these, football clubs also make money by trading players, leasing out their stadiums for other events such as concerts, etc.
